Eye flu, also known as conjunctivitis, is a common eye infection that causes inflammation and redness of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids.

EYE FLU: RED, EDEMATOUS, PURULENT

EYE FLU IS CAUSED by various factors, such as bacteria, viruses, allergies, or irritants.

Present rise in cases is predominantly due to viruses (influenza).

SYMPTOMS & SIGN IN EYE FLU

  • Redness and swelling of the eyes
  • Itching and burning sensation in the eyes
  • Watery or pus-like discharge from the eyes
  • Crusting of the eyelids or lashes
  • Sensitivity to light Blurred vision

Eye flu is usually not a serious condition and often resolves on its own within a week or two. 

 

However, some cases may require medical attention, especially if the infection is severe or affects the cornea (the clear layer that covers the front of the eye).

To prevent complications and reduce discomfort, It is important to follow these steps:

 1. Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes

2.  Wash your hands frequently with soap and water 

3. Use a clean towel or tissue to wipe your eyes gently 

4. Do not share personal items such as towels, pillows, makeup, or contact lenses with others 

5. Discard any eye drops or cosmetics that may be contaminated 

6. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from sunlight and dust.

EYE DROPS:

  • Synthetic tears or lubricating eye drops to lessen discomfort brought on by ocular dryness and keep the eyes moist.
  •  Antibiotic ointment or drops if bacteria are the root of your eye flu.Ofloxacin/ Ciprofloxacin/ Chloramphenicol/ Tobramycin Eyedrops 3-4 times/ day,
  • Decongestant Eyedrops like Mezol 2-3 times a day.
  • Antihistamine eye drops to avoid exposure to allergens.
  • Corticosteroid eye drops in severe cases.
